Abstract

This study examines the implications of the interest capitalization process on the profitability of microcredit operations, using Txi Microcrédito, located in the city of Nampula, Mozambique, as a case study for the period between 2022 and 2024. The main objective was to analyze how interest capitalization affects the profitability of microcredit operations, considering both its financial effects and its social implications. Specifically, the research sought to characterize the interest capitalization process adopted by the institution, identify the key determinants of profitability, and interpret the relationship between interest capitalization and major financial performance indicators. Methodologically, the study is classified as basic research with a qualitative and explanatory approach, employing the case study as the primary technical procedure, complemented by bibliographic research. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis, involving 10 institutional staff members. The data were analyzed using thematic content analysis. The findings indicate that interest capitalization, particularly under a compound interest regime with monthly capitalization, contributes positively to institutional profitability, as reflected in Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), and operating profit margin. However, frequent capitalization increases the effective cost of credit, affecting borrowers’ repayment capacity and potentially increasing default risk. The study concludes that interest capitalization has an ambivalent effect, strengthening financial sustainability while simultaneously posing challenges to the social mission of microfinance institutions.
