Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in persistent sequelae in a significant proportion of affected patients, characterizing the so-called post-Covid-19 syndrome. Given this scenario, the present study aimed to analyze the available scientific evidence on the role of physiotherapy in the rehabilitation of these patients, with emphasis on respiratory function, muscle strength, and quality of life. This is an integrative literature review with a qualitative approach, with searches conducted in PubMed, PubMed Central, SciELO, and Lilacs databases, covering publications from 2020 to 2024. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, seven studies were selected for in-depth analysis, including systematic reviews, a randomized clinical trial, and cohort studies. Results indicate that interventions such as respiratory exercises, inspiratory muscle training (IMT), progressive aerobic exercise, and peripheral muscle strengthening are associated with reduced dyspnea, increased exercise tolerance — assessed by the six-minute walk test (6MWT) and the mMRC scale — and recovery of independence in activities of daily living. Patients discharged from intensive care units (ICU) showed a higher risk of acquired muscle weakness and functional limitations, reinforcing the importance of early and continuous physiotherapeutic intervention. It is concluded that physiotherapy is indispensable in the post-Covid-19 recovery process, with a positive and measurable impact on patients' functional capacity and quality of life.
