Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the theoretical and empirical foundations involving student motivation, identifying its psychosocial determinants, verifying its structural influence on the learning process, and discussing the correlation between motivational levels, academic engagement, and mental health indicators. This is an integrative literature review grounded in theoretical frameworks of educational psychology, health education, and collective health. The search was conducted across the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Virtual Health Library (VHL), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and Electronic Periodicals in Psychology (PePSIC) databases, covering publications between 2019 and 2026, in addition to classic works that support the field. The results demonstrate that motivation is not a fixed trait but a dynamic process mediated by basic psychological needs, perceptions of self-efficacy, and contextual factors; furthermore, its absence or weakening serves as a predictor of low performance, disengagement, and psychological distress. It is concluded that the promotion of motivation requires an integrated approach that articulates the principles of self-determination theory, meaningful learning, and school health policies, aiming at the student's integral development.
